The Mullah’s Judgement

Filed under: Folk Tales — christon @ 7:52 am

Little Yusuf liked sugar. He liked sugar so much that he ate up all the sugar in the sugar-pot every day. When his mother didn’t put sugar in the sugar-pot, Yusuf opened the cupboard and found the sugar bottle. It didn’t matter that he felt sick. He just ate as much sugar as he could find.

“Oh, Yusuf! What shall I do with you?” his mother cried. “Your teeth will fall out. Your stomach will fill up with worms.” But Yusuf kept eating sugar. When he couldn’t find sugar in his own house he stole it from neighbours.

One day, in despair, Yusuf’s mother went to see the mullah. She told him about Yusuf’s love of sugar. “What shall I do about it, Your Lordship?” she sighed.

“Why doesn’t your husband forbid him to eat sugar?” the mullah asked. “A man can discipline his son.”

“My husband died when Yusuf was born,” Yusuf mother’s cried, “Yusuf need a man’s hand. I can’t control him.”

“Well bring him to me next week,” the mullah said, “and I will tell him very sternly that he may eat only so much sugar each day.”

“May Allah give you long life,” said Yusuf’s mother. “That’s just what Yusuf needs.”

The next week Yusuf’s mother brought him to the mullah. The mullah spoke to Yusuf about his friends and the games they played, but said nothing about the sugar. After a little while he said to Yusuf’s mother. “Bring him back next week.”

So Yusuf’s mother brought him back in the next week. Again the mullah said nothing about the sugar. “Ah!” Yusuf’s mother thought. “Maybe he’s trying to make friends with Yusuf first.”

“Bring him back next week,” said the mullah again.

The next week Yusuf and his mother went back in the mullah’s house.
And this time the mullah said, “Yusuf, I’m like your father. Now you must do as I tell you. I want you to eat three spoonfuls of sugar everyday. No more, no less. Will you do as I say?”

“Yes, Your Lordship,” said Yusuf. He liked the mullah very much.

One daym, soon after, Yusuf’s mother met the mullah on the road. “Allah bless you, Your Lordship,” she said, “Yusuf now eats only three spoonfuls of sugar everyday.”
She paused, “But I’m curious to know why you took so long to tell Yusuf how much sugar he could eat.”

“My good woman,” the mullah said, “it took those three weeks to see if I could cut down the amount of sugar I ate. How could I ask someone else to do something I couldn’t do myself?”
