3. The Pajajaran’s Offer

On the west side of Priangan, bordered on the Kingdom of Sunda Kalapa, there was a big kingdom called Pajajaran, The king of Pajajaran was recognized as a magically powerful and heroic. The people were great in number, and the soldiers were experienced in the battle fields. So Pajajaran was feared by the surrounding small countries.

The King had a son named Munding Depa. He was a handsome young man and was educated in was knowledge, politics and convention knowledge.

As a prince who in short time would enthrone to become a king, it was necessary of Munding Depa to take a woman for his wife immediately. Indeed many noble women were proposed by his mother, but no one pleased him. So the King and his wife were felt dejected.

One day a son of commander in chief told Munding Depa about the beauty and good manners of Puteri Dewi Ngalima. Munding Depa was attracted by what he heard about her. That’s why he often imagined the beauty of Puteri Dewi Ngalima.

Soon after his mother knew the beloved son was falling in love with someone, she told it to her husband, the King. Then the King sends for Munding Depa. When Munding Depa arrived, the King said, “My son. I think it is time for you to marry. What do you think about it?”

“Yes, father the King. Accidently I heard that the princess of Rangga Gading called Puteri Dewi Ngalima is a beautiful woman and she had good manners. If you don’t mind, please propose to her to be my wife,” said Munding Depa.

“Why not, my dear son. I’ll send a delegation to the Kingdom of Pajajaran.” said the King happily.

In order to please the only son, the King sent a delegation led by the eldest state official and guarded by some soldiers to Rangga Gading. The delegation brought some expensive gifts for Puteri Dewi Ngalima.

In short, the delegations arrived there, and were accepted in the guest hall by the king of Rangga Gading. Then the leader of the delegation told their intention.

The king of Rangga Gading was confused. Puteri Dewi Ngalima was engaged to the prince of Kesultanan Cirebon, but if the Pajajaran’s offer was refused, he feared that the king of Pajajaran would become angry and attack his country.

While they were talking, from far away Puteri Dewi Ngalima observed Munding Depa who sat among other guests. Munding Depa knew the Princess was observing him. So he smiled to her. After Puteri Dewi Ngalima knew that Munding Depa was handsome, she was attracted by him soon. She liked his smile and good behavior. Munding Depa pleased her very much.
