1. The Kingdom of Rangga Gading
Formerly in the beautiful Priangan area, not far from the slope of Mount Sawal, there was a kingdom called Rangga Gading. The kingdom was not very big. But life there was pleasant, because the soil was fertile and prosperous. The king of Rangga Gading governed the kingdom so honestly and wisely, that the people loved him. Everyone loved and honored His Majesty, because the king paid attention to his people, and liked to help them; the rich, the poor, the old or the young, the male or the female were just the same to the King. Whoever asked him for help, if necessary, he would help him.
The king of Rangga Gading had an unusual throne. It was not a golden throne but only a big stone called Batu Complang. This was a curious throne. According to the people the throne was miraculous.
Once the King had a wife, but she passed away. That’s why his whole love was devoted to his only daughter named Puteri Dewi Ngalima.
Puteri Dewi Ngalima was young and pretty. Her beauty and good manners were recognized everywhere.
The King felt no need to marry again, because Puteri Dewi Ngalima, besides having good behavior and good manners, she was also capable in housekeeping. All of the servants and the palace officials performed their job very well under guidance of the Princess, her father felt satisfied.
As told earlier, her beauty and good behavior were well-known everywhere. So many young men such as princes and sons of the rich people fell in love with her. But she refused them all because she didn’t want to marry yet, and she also felt pity to leave her father alone.
A banyan tree that was planted in the palace yard became thin in some places caused by the reins bound fast around it by the Princess’s lovers when they came to ask her for their wife. But no one succeeded.
