5. Panjilaras and Kinantan

Filed under: Panjilaras and His Wondercock — christon @ 9:34 am

When Panjilaras came back two weeks later, he found a tiny chicken near the snake. The egg had hatched at last.

“There’s your chicken, my boy,” said the snake, “and I’d be greatly surprised if it doesn’t turn out to be a cock.”

“Thank you, Auntie Snake, you’re the most beautiful snake in the world,” laughed Panjilaras. Gathering the small creature in his hands, he left the snake and ran home to show his mother his new pet.

The little chicken grew quickly. Soon all its down had changed into shiny feathers. The snake was right, the chicken was a cock. In a few months’ time it had grown into a big strong cock, with a sharp beak, fierce eyes, red and yellow feathers and a magnificent long, black tail.
Panjilaras called his cock Kinantan. He was so fond of the animal that he kept Kinantan close to him most of the time.

One day something unexpected happened. Kinantan flew to the top of the roof. He flapped his wings and stretched his long neck; the he crowed loudly and spoke clearly in a human voice:

“Cockle-cockle-doo.
I belong to a boy of fame,
Panjilaras is his name,
The dark forest is his home,
There were animals freely roam.
Dewi Murti his mother is called,
And his father is king of us all.”

Panjilaras, who was working in their little garden, stopped his work and listened in amazement.

“What did you say, Kinantan? Did you say that I’m the son of a king? Tell me more about it, Kinantan.”

The cock, however did not answer. He flew down from the roof and began picking the grass, looking for worms.

Panjilaras told his mother about Kinantan’s word and asked her what that might mean. Dewi Murti then understood that now was the time to tell her son about his father.

Panjilaras listened very carefully, and when his mother had finished her sad story he jumped up and exclaimed, “Let me go to the town, Mother. I want to visit my father, the king!”

“No, no, Panjilaras, the demon will kill you!” said his mother.

But Panjilaras begged her to let him go and didn’t leave her in peace until she agreed.
