2. The Real Queen Helpless In The Ravine

Filed under: Panjilaras and His Wondercock — christon @ 9:31 am

The queen was glad to have something to do until the king came back. She went out of the hut and joined Nikin.
“Do you like flowers?” asked the evil spirit. “I know a place where the most beautiful orchids grow.”

So the queen followed Nikin to the edge of a deep ravine, where many marvelous forest-orchids grew.

Dewi Murti thought the flowers were the most beautiful she had ever seen.

“I wish I could pick some,” she said.
“That wouldn’t be too difficult. Just bend down a little, and you can easily pick them,” Nikin said.

The queen, fascinated by the flowers, bent down, but at the same time the demon gave her a violent push, so that the poor woman fell into the deep ravine.

Then Nikin hurried back to the little hut. She closed her eyes and, using all her magic powers, she succeeded in changing herself into the exact shape of Dewi Murti. Then she sat down in front of the little window and waited eagerly for the king to return.

Some time later the king and his servant, having killed a deer, came back to the hut. They found the “queen” still sitting in the same place where they had left her. She greeted the king with a smile and he did not suspect at all that the woman who spoke to him was not his wife, but a spirit. Only Santo, his servant, felt that something was wrong, thought he did not know exactly what. Perhaps it was because the “queen” did not say a single word to him. Dewi Murti was usually kind to all her servants and subjects. The king, however, did not notice anything.

And so the three went home to the palace, leaving the real queen helpless in the ravine.
