11. The Whole Kingdom Was Joyful

Filed under: Panjilaras and His Wondercock — christon @ 9:29 am

The next day the king called all his ministers and high officials together to the big hall. The false queen was also present. When everybody was seated, the king told them about Dewi Murti and Nikin, the true and false queen, and asked them what should be done.

Before anybody could say a word, the false queen cried out furiously, “That woman is lying. Let her prove that she’s the real Dewi Murti!”

Now Dewi Murti was called into the hall. Side by side the two woman stood, in front of the people there. Everyone was amazed, for the two woman looked exactly alike.

At the moment Santo stood up, and holding up an earthenware jug, he said in a clear voice, “The one who can squeeze herself into this jug is the real queen!” and he placed the jug in front of the king.

“Ah, Santo,” said Dewi Murti with a smile, “how could a human being get into such a small object?”

Nikin, however said, “That’s easy enough, I’m the real queen. To prove it I shall enter the jug.”

She said a strange spell and in an instant the audience saw her change into smoke that quickly dissapeared into the narrow neck of the jug. Immediately Santo jump upon the jug and pushed a stopper into its neck, blocking the opening. Nikin was tricked and captured!

“Look at your real queen, my good people,” Santo then cried out. “An ordinary human being could not possibly do what this demon has done.”

A roar went up in the hall.

“Kill her! Kill the demon!” the people shouted.

Santo smashed the jug with great force onto the floor. A cry of pain rose up from the broken pieces and there on the floor lay Nikin in her true ugly form. Santo pulled out his dagger and killed her before she could use any other dangerous tricks. In this way Nikin died!

The king could not thank Santo enough for this cleverness which gave him back his real wife and son, and the people of Paripurna their real queen and a crown prince.

Everyone throughout the whole kingdom was joyful. For forty days and nights the royal family celebrated, with the entire population, the homecoming of Dewi Murti and Panjilaras.

From that time onwards the king willingly gave up his favourite pastime of hunting, for neither Panjilaras nor Dewi Murti could bear the thought of their animal friends being killed or hurt. Kinantan, however, won the king many prizes. During his lifetime not a single cock could win a fight when he was around!
