1. Left Alone In The Little Hut
One fine morning a king was hunting in a thick forest. With his was his lovely queen and his faithful servant. For more than an hour the three wandered around, but not a single animal crossed their path.
Since the queen was with them, the two men could not ride very fast.
At last the king said, “My dear, would you mind staying here and wait for us until we come back? I’m sure we’ll have more luck if we go deeper into the forest, but I don’t want to get you to get too tired. As soon as we’ve killed a deer, we’ll come back to you.”
The queen agreed, for indeed she felt a bit tired. There was a deserted hut not far away, and there the two men left Dewi Murti, the queen, so that they could go hunting deep in the forest.
Left alone in the little hut, Dewi Murti sat down near the window. She looked at the clear stream not far from where she sat. She felt very happy. She had such good news to tell the king. In about six months’ time a little prince or princess would be born. How glad the king would be! She was so deep in
thought that she did not see that she was being watched.
In that same forest there lived an evil female spirit whose name was Nikin. Nikin had wanted to have a human husband for a long time, but until that day she had never had a chance. On that morning she happened to go to the little stream to have a bath. When she saw the queen sitting all alone in the hut she grew curious. And she decided to find out who the lovely young woman is.
She changed herself into a form of a young girl and walked towards the hut. Standing at the foot of the narrow stairs, she said in a soft voice, “Young lady, who are you? Why are you all alone?”
Dewi Murti was glad to see her. She liked to have company while the king was away. Kindly she answered, “I’m the queen of the country, Paripurna. My husband, the king, is hunting in the forest. He’ll back soon to fetch me. And who are you?”
When she heard the queen’s word, Nikin realized that here at last was her chance to get herself a human husband. Sweetly, she answered, “I’m the daughter of a woodcutter and I’ve lived in this forest all my life. Wouldn’t you like to come out of the hut? I know all the beautiful places around here.”
